As part of the blog, we’re going to try to take time each week to shine the spotlight on one of the members of the team. We’ll be kicking this series off with Alex Garnett, who got to answer a round of questions today in honor of it being his birthday!
Alex Garnett is a 23 year old recent graduate from Florida Atlantic University with a Bachelor’s degree in Ocean Engineering. His interests include American football and soccer, scuba diving, travel, and robotics.
What projects are you working on while in Cambodia?
I’m part of the team that is working on the “MInebot,” which is an autonomous robot that we hope can support demining operations by reducing the amount of land that needs to be surveyed by hand. Specifically, I am working on the LIDAR vision system that helps the robot navigate through its environment.
What drew you to choosing this project and working in Cambodia?
I chose this program because it presents a phenomenal opportunity to work in the field of robotics, while also expanding my worldview and engaging in humanitarian efforts. Additionally, partnering with Golden West is a great chance to work closely with the operators who will be using this project in the field.
What are your plans for after this summer? Going back to school? Have a job?
After this summer I will begin working full-time in the engineering field. I’m eager to continue working in robotics and engineering solutions for a better world.
What trajectory drew you to get into engineering and your current field?
I began my engineering education without much knowledge about the field, but hungry for a challenge. My experience at Florida Atlantic University taught me a lot about systems engineering, and through my school projects I learned to address problem using robotics.
What are your long term professional goals? How will your experience in Cambodia help reach those goals?
I want use my education and knowledge to make a positive impact in the the world through engineering. This program is providing me with valuable experience identifying legitimate real-world problems, and working with local people to create a solution. I hope that the Minebot will soon be in the field, assisting EOD operations and working to save lives.
